I’ve often written about how I don’t get the fuss about stablecoins earning yield when they’re designed to move, not just sit there – yield is the domain of tokenized money market funds (TMMFs), an asset banks can’t get upset about (that boat sailed). My thesis has been that stablecoins don’t need yield as they will sit next to TMMFs in wallets, with smart contracts moving balances back and forth as needed. At the time, I wasn’t even taking AI agents into account, but they could further empower the search for yield, by scanning for the best returns in any given moment – TMMFs, vaults, whatever suits the user’s preferences, switching into stablecoins when a transfer is needed. Meanwhile, banks gloat that they won the stablecoin battle, when stablecoins were never where the threat to deposits lies.
